Rediscovering My Love for LEGOs

When I was around six, my mom bought me my first set of LEGOs. It was a simple, standard set, but to me, it was a world of endless possibilities. I remember the joy of dumping the pieces on the floor, seeing them scatter around my room, and then grabbing them one by one to build towering structures and imaginative creations. Those moments were filled with pure fun and creativity.

As I grew older, like Andy in Toy Story, I slowly drifted away from my toys. The demands of school, sports, and other activities took over, and my beloved LEGO sets were left behind. But recently, something unexpected happened that brought those childhood memories rushing back.

While scrolling through TikTok, I stumbled upon a vibrant community of LEGO enthusiasts. These were adults, people my age, passionately sharing their intricate builds and creative displays. It was fascinating to see their enthusiasm and the incredible things they were creating. However, a part of me hesitated, worried about being judged for playing with toys meant for kids.

But the idea of playing with LEGOs lingered in my mind. Every time I went to the store, I found myself lingering longer in the LEGO aisle, imagining what it would be like to dive back into building. Then, about two weeks ago, my family and I went to the mall, and we picked up a beginner LEGO set for my 17-month-old son. Watching him play with those bright, chunky blocks, I felt a spark of my old excitement.

The next day, I decided to take the plunge. I ordered the LEGO Bouquet of Roses. When it arrived, I eagerly asked my partner if she wanted to build it with me. That evening turned into a fantastic date night. We sat together, sorting the pieces and following the instructions, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. It was a wonderfully relaxing and satisfying experience, and I found myself admiring the intricate details of our completed bouquet.

The Benefits of Playing with LEGOs as an Adult

Rediscovering LEGOs as an adult has been an eye-opening experience. Here are some of the benefits I’ve found in embracing this playful hobby:

  • Stress Relief - Building with LEGOs is a great way to unwind. The repetitive nature of sorting and assembling pieces can be meditative, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  • Creativity and Problem-Solving - LEGOs encourage creative thinking and problem-solving. Whether you’re following a set of instructions or designing your own creation, you engage your brain in a unique way.
  • Mindfulness - Focusing on the task at hand helps cultivate mindfulness. It requires you to be present, paying attention to each piece and where it fits, which can be a calming and grounding experience.
  • Bonding - Building together can strengthen relationships. My partner and I enjoyed a special evening of teamwork and laughter, and I look forward to sharing this hobby with my son as he grows.
  • Nostalgia - Revisiting a childhood pastime brings back happy memories and a sense of nostalgia. It’s a reminder that it’s okay to enjoy things that make you happy, regardless of age.

Lego Art & Home Decor

One of the unexpected parts of my LEGO journey is discovering the artistic potential of these tiny bricks. LEGOs can be more than just toys; they can be beautiful pieces of art or unique home decor. The LEGO Bouquet of Roses I built with my partner now sits proudly on our kitchen island. It’s a conversation starter and a piece of our shared creativity. Incorporating LEGOs into home decor allows for personalized, playful, and aesthetically pleasing displays that bring a touch of whimsy and color to any space.

Embracing What Makes You Happy

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through my renewed love for LEGOs is the importance of doing what makes you happy, without fear of judgment. In a world that often pressures us to conform and act our age, it’s liberating to embrace the activities that bring us joy. Playing with LEGOs has reminded me that fun and creativity are ageless, and it’s perfectly fine to indulge in a hobby that brings happiness and fulfillment.

So, to anyone who feels hesitant about revisiting a childhood passion, I say go for it. Dive back into those activities that light up your spirit. Whether it’s building with LEGOs, painting, playing an instrument, or anything else that brings you joy, remember that your happiness is worth pursuing. Life is too short to let fear of judgment hold you back.

I’m excited to continue this journey and share my builds with all of you. Until next time!
